About Us
The Greater Mt. Olive  Baptist Church was organized in  1915,  under the leadership Of  Rev.  K.  D.  Watklns.   The  Stone  Street  Baptist  Church  which  was  organized  in 1806, was our Mother Church.  A friction developed and the idea Of forming a new church was entertained by Rev, K. D, Watkins.   Mt. Olive Baptist Missionary Church No.  2  came  out  after the  controversy  with  the  same  minister  as  its  first  pastor, (Rev. K.  D. Watkins) who served for about two years, until his death.

The  earty  worship  services  were  held  in  the  Loving  Charity  Hall,  then  located  on Scott Street between  Lyons  and Adams  Street.   Services were  later moved  into  a small frame building on the corner of Lyons and Wilkerson Street (now Wash/ngton Avenue);  into another lager but small white  building that was facing Lyons  St.,  and later became widely known as "The Church on the Ditch". The Rev. A. A. BIunt was the successor to the late Rev.  K. D. Watkins from 1917 thru 1937.

The Rev. L W. Johnson followed Rev. A. A,  Blunt as pastor and for about eighteen months Of which the Rev. John Batt Weaver succeeded him in late 1939.  Rev, J. B. Weaver started  his  administration  in  the  building that was  torn  down  in  1953.  In early  1957,  on  the  Northwest corner of Lafayette  and  Congress  Streets,  property was purchased and construction of a new building began and was completed in the late  summer.   The   church's   name  was   changed  from   Mount  Ol'ive   Missionary Baptist  Church   No.  2  to  Greater  Mt.  Olive   Baptist  Church   No. 2.  The  original membership was one hundred forty (140)  and  had grown to one thousand one hundred  ninety-two (1,192)  members  under the  leadership  Of Rev.  J. B.  Weaver, one Of the largest memberships  in the city of Mobile and this  part Of the State of Alabama,   The   church    has   been   organized    into   departments   to   meet   the membership's  needs,  namely: The  Sunday School  ,  B.T.U.  later  named the  N.B.C,, Laymen   Brotherhood;   Missionary  Society  with  the   matrons   and   its   auxiliaries, Music   Department;    Vocal    Choir,    Male   Chorus,    Senior   Choir,    Hubert    Baker Choraliers,   Youth   Choir  and   Praise  Team,   usher   Boards,   Nurses'   Aides,   Youth Department and Pastor's Aide Board,

Rev.  Nathaniel Dortch  was elected to  pastor this  church on November  13,  1978 and served until 1982 when the pulpit was declared vacant.   Mt, Olive celebrated its first   "Family   and   Friends  Day'   on   March   27,   1983   with   Sis. Ware   serving   as chairman, The theme "There's Unity in Prayer". On December 6, 1983, the Officers and members elected the Rev. Hubert Baker to serve as pastor.   Now (2020) in his 36th year, Reverend Baker continues to serves as pastor.
